TYRRELLS Born of a colourful English history, Edward Tyrrell was to unknowingly establish one of today’s great Australian wine enterprises, and begin a tradition which has survived four generations. Arriving in Australia in the early 18505, it was not until 1858 that Edward took up 320 acres of land at Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley. A late purchaser, he had unwittingly bought some of the best land in the region He built a slab hut and prepared the sight for a vineyard planting. Six years later in 1864, Edward produced his first vintage. Methods used by Edward are still practiced by his grandson Murray Tyrrell today, and products such as Tynell’s Dry Red have evolved from a simple philosophy and tradition which has lasted 134 years. |

McWILLIAMS Originally based at Corowa in New South Wales, Mcwilliams history spans five generations of fine winemakers. One of the truly Australian labels, it was the establishment by John James McWilliam of the Hanwood Winery in the Riverina District, in 1912 that led to the McWiIliams name becoming a major brand within the wine industry. Today the classic rich port and sherries that shaped the McWifliam’s of yesterday, are still available. With the establishment of additional wineries in the Hunter Valley and in Coonawana, however has come an increased emphasis on the production of medal winning table and sparkling wines. |

YALUMBA The story of Yalumba ("aboriginal for all the land around”) began in 1849 when Samuel Smith, a brewer from Dorset, purchased 30 acres of land near Angaston in South Australia’s Barossa Valley With the assistance of his son Sidney he planted the first Yalamba vines, and later, using his knowledge of fermentation commenced making wine. From this humble beginning Yalumba has become a highly respected producer of premium Australian wines. Today, Samuel’s great, great grandson heads Australia's oldest family owned winery. Yalumba Galway Pipe Port takes its name from Sir Henry Galway governor of South Australia 1914 1920, who as a visitor to Yalumla selected his own personal pipes (a certain type of barrel) of port. |

PENFOLDS Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold arrived in the young colony of South Australia in 1844. With his wife Mary, he settled at Magill, 9kms from Adelaide. However, preferring healthy vines to unhealthy patients. Dr Penfbld devoted more of his time to his vineyard and the production of papular wines. The company's story is one of continuous improvement and expansion. From small beginnings, Penfolds today is one of Australia’s premier wine makers achieving outstanding international success. |
